Afro-Sustainable Fashion Initiative Empowers with Game-Changing Workshop on Sustainable Fashion and Business Management

The Afro-Sustainable Fashion Initiative (Afro-SFI), led by Catharina Natang, a Cameroon-based fashion house, conducted a training workshop on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, on sustainable fashion and business management.

This immersive workshop aimed to demystify sustainable fashion, equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of its principles, and empower them to drive positive change in the industry.

During the workshop, participants gained knowledge on the concept of sustainable fashion and the environmental impact of plastics in fashion. Team project member Dr. Maboh Michel cheered  the first phase of the workshop with extensive lectures as follows:

Plastics and Microplastics: The workshop dedicated a session to the discussion of plastics and microplastics. Participants learned about the different types of plastics, their properties, and how they contribute to environmental pollution. The detrimental impacts of plastics and microplastics on ecosystems, water bodies, and human health were extensively covered.

Fabric Exploration: Participants had the opportunity to explore a wide range of sustainable fabrics. They learned about the history of fabric development, different fabric types (including plastic-based and non-plastic-based), and their applications in fashion design. By understanding the scope of microplastic pollution in the fashion industry, participants gained insights into driving factors and potential solutions.

Advantages of Sustainable Fabrics: The workshop highlighted the benefits of designing with sustainable fabrics. These fabrics were presented as durable, moth-resistant, breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and environmentally friendly alternatives. Participants learned how sustainable fabrics can contribute to a healthier environment and improved human health.

Sustainable Fabric Care and Waste Reduction: Practical strategies for caring for sustainable fabrics were shared with participants. They were educated on sustainable washing practices, the use of eco-friendly detergents, and following fabric care instructions. Additionally, participants were encouraged to repurpose waste fabric and old clothes, transforming them into new fashion items or other useful products.

Business Management Strategies: The workshop went beyond sustainable fashion principles and covered essential business management aspects. Participants were guided through the process of developing a business plan, securing funding, purchasing equipment, branding, advertising, and financial planning. The importance of customer education and building strong relationships to foster brand loyalty was emphasized.

The workshop fostered interactive discussions, allowing participants to engage with industry experts and exchange ideas. Notably, Mrs. Catherine N. Michel Maboh, the CEO of Catharina Natang fashion house, shared her experiences and provided guidance on becoming a sustainable fashion designer. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, seek advice, and gain valuable insights from these sessions.

To enhance the learning experience, the workshop included hands-on activities. Participants were guided by Miss Catherine to physically touch and examine various fabrics, familiarizing themselves with their unique properties. They also engaged in pattern drawing exercises and took part in a sustainable design challenge, to create fashion concepts or outfits using sustainable patterns.

By incorporating these elements, the workshop aimed to offer a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. Participants gained practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and valuable insights from industry experts, empowering them to make informed decisions and contribute to the sustainable fashion movement.
